How to Identify and Profit from Industry Trends

Some of the most successful businesspeople seem to have a knack for creating their own luck. Simply by being in the right place at the right time, they are able to get in on the ground floor of emerging trends before the news becomes public knowledge.

The ability to identify and capitalize on trends in the marketplace doesn’t require a crystal ball to foresee the future; there are a number of excellent free and paid online resources that allow you to follow the breaking trends and help you identify the true diamonds in the rough.

  • Select up to 5 topics of interest and Google Trends will provide a comparative analysis of the search popularity of your selected topics over time.
  • You can also view stats that show the frequency of your topic’s appearance in Google News.
  • Google Trends is particularly useful in determining the popularity of various keyword terms.

BuzzFeed
BuzzFeed organizes and displays the most-shared content across the social media landscape. You can follow what’s happening through a daily RSS feed. This a great tool for helping you determine the type of content you should be featuring on your own social posts.

Springwise.com and Entepreneur.com – These two sites are excellent sources for inspiring and innovative new business ideas.

Topsy Analytics
Topsy is a social search engine with a Twitter analytics tool which provides up to 30 days’ worth of trending link stats for any 3 topics that you wish to compare. Data is provided by Twitter, and only mentions that have been retweeted or that contain a link are included.

The Huffington Post
The Huffington Post provides an informative daily overview of the current state of the web. Check out the Trends tab for a look at the day’s most popular topics. Geographic editions are currently offered for the US, Canada, UK, France, Italy, and Spain.

Think With Google
